USCG and IMO MEPC.300 (72) certified, Revised Guidelines (G8) adopted by resolution MEPC.174 (58), the Scienco® InTank ™ treats and neutralizes ballast water in ballast tanks during voyage.


The InTank ™ solution does not have a filter, a distinctive feature unlike most conventional in-line systems. The innovative InTank ™ circulation method is based on the application of active substances to meet IMO D-2 discharge standards and is effective in all water qualities. A small circulation of ballast is drawn aft from one ballast tank at a time, the Active Substance, Sodium Hypochlorite, is added (produced by an EC Cell or from Bulk Chemical storage, or both) to the circulation and returned to the tank. Treatment is monitored using the TRO concentration of the circulated ballast. Processing and neutralization are confirmed and recorded before the start of deballasting. Unique, elegant, robust.

Why should I choose Scienco® InTank™?

During a Port of Call, the ship’s cargo and ballast operations are time critical processes demanding large electrical power. Unlike conventional in-line systems that treat ballast water at uptake alongside during Port of Call, the Scienco® InTank™, a 2nd-generation USCG, IMO Revised G8 Type Approved BWTS, operates InVoyage™. A more convenient, economical and secure time to treat ballast water and stay InCompliance™, since there is sufficient treatment- and crew time, and moreover service load power available.

Operational design limitations such as: port water salinity, turbidity and temperature are of no concern when treatment is performed InVoyage™. With InTank™ BWTS installed, ships can ballast and de-ballast freely and as required for their operations avoiding risks of costly delays and without compromises to vessel operations. Finally, the flexibility to delay treatment of ballast tanks introduces also a means to avoid biological regrowth on longer voyages. Everything remains InControl™.

Treatment Overview

When a vessel uses the Scienco® inTank™ BWTS, water is taken-up into ballast tanks with no change to existing operating procedures, i.e. no treatment occurs during uptake. A small portion of ballast water is suctioned from one ballast water tank at a time, passed through the circulation module, and returned to the same ballast water tank through in-tank mixing nozzles. Since the treatment process occurs during voyage, more power is available for the system. In most cases, no changes to shipboard power is necessary.

The Scienco® inTank™ BWTS process ensures disinfection of ballast water tanks and piping through the application of a targeted CT, which is the product of disinfection Concentration (in milligrams per liter, mg/L) and disinfection contact Time (in hours) measured as total residual oxidant (TRO). The CT approach is commonly employed in the wastewater treatment industry and for municipalities ensuring safe drinking water.

The Scienco® inTank™ mixing system was studied at full-scale with tracer dyes and in computer simulations for all tank configurations. The EPA manual (US EPA 1999b) provides guidance on assigning a “baffling factor” based on a tank’s mixing efficiency. This factor accounts for dead zones and short circuiting of disinfectant application within a tank. Each Scienco® inTank™ system will be engineered to meet or exceed EPA baffling factors to guarantee compliance.

The primary advantage of the Scienco® inTank™ system is its superior method of chemical delivery. Our patented nozzle, coupled with an Scienco® inTank™ distribution piping system is able to treat each ballast tank individually by distributing the active ingredient, sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl).
SciencoFAST® offers multiple options to produce NaOCl: bulk dosing and an onboard, electrochlorination generator. If the bulk-dosing option is selected, the user will simply maintain an adequate level of liquid NaOCl in a bulk-dosing tank. The system then distributes the chemical as needed when the ballast water treating cycle begins. In cases where the owner or operator chooses an on-site generator, seawater from the sea-chest is used to produce NaOCl that is similarly distributed to the ballast tanks. Both means provide a safe and reliable method to deliver the active substance into the ballast tank and ensure a compliant discharge. Regardless of the production method, the chemistry and biological efficacy are identical thus giving the ship owner the ability to choose the most economical method based on vessel ballast capacity and expected voyage time. This is a feature no other system can off er to the industry.

  • Minimum Average Total Residual Oxidant (TRO): 2-5 mg/L (varies with hold time)

The dosing modules with the “X” suffix (i.e., DM065X) meet the requirements of 46 CFR 111.105 and may be installed in hazardous locations to which it is certified on a U.S. flag vessel. All other components, including other dosing modules (i.e., DM065G) must remain outside of hazardous locations. The “X” dosing modules may be installed in hazardous locations to which they are certified on a foreign flag vessel subject to approval of the foreign administration.
